Preliminary Medicine Track

Internal Medicine Residents

Categorical Internal Medicine Track
Categorical residents are required to complete seven core electives:

  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Nephrology
  • Cardiology
  • Hematology/Oncology
  • Infectious Disease
  • Gastroenterology
  • Neurology

Additional rotation options include Allergy/Immunology, Endocrinology, and Radiology. Heart Station and Rheumatology are incorporated into the required Ambulatory rotations. Off-campus electives are available and can be arranged on an individual basis. A maximum of one month may be spent off campus during the three-year Categorical Internal Medicine Track.

PGY 1 Typical Schedule

  • General Medicine (hospitalist/ non hospitalist) and Telemetry (hospitalist/ non hospitalist) for 7-8 months, of which 1 is usually spent as a night float intern. The night float rotation is comprised of distinct two week blocks.
  • Critical Care Medicine (ICU) for 1-2 months2 weeks of ICU – NF combined with 2 weeks of other subspecialty
  • Ambulatory Medicine for 1 month
  • Elective Rotations for 1-2 month(s)

PGY II and III Years

  • 3– 4 Rotations in Ambulatory Medicine (includes ER)
  • 3-4 Rotations in Critical Care 
  • 6-8 Rotations in medical subspecialty electives
  • 1 month in Geriatric Medicine
  • 1 month in Palliative Care/End-Of-Life Medicine
  • Remaining rotations in supervisory capacity on the general medical floors and Telemetry
  • One month as a night float resident

Typical Day on the Medical Floor

7:00 - 7:30 a.m. Pre-round*
7:30 - 8:30 a.m. Morning Report
8:30 - 10:30 a.m. Patient Care (includes multidisciplinary rounds)
10:30 a.m. - Noon Teaching Rounds/Patient Care Rounds
Noon - 1 p.m. Noon Conference
1 - 4:30 p.m. Patient Care/Teaching Rounds
4:30 - 5:00 p.m. Sign-Out Rounds
