Weight Loss Surgery

It’s more than just weight loss. Bariatric surgery can open the door to a healthy new life for people unable to lose weight. Patients who have undergone minimally invasive bariatric surgery not only experienced significant weight loss, but have also improved overall health. Becoming a Surgical Candidate

To qualify for weight loss surgery a person must:

  • Be between the ages of 18 and 70
  • Have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more OR a BMI between 35-39.9 and a serious obesity related health problem, such as type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease or sleep apnea
  • Be an acceptable operative risk
  • Be motivated, well-informed, and able to participate in long-term care follow-up
  • Be willing to make the necessary lifestyle changes to achieve long-term success

About Dr. Winkleman

Brian J. WinklemanBrian Winkleman, MD is board certified in general surgery and specializes in endoscopy, minimally invasive, and bariatric surgery. He is also fellowship trained in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery. Dr. Winkleman is a graduate of Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his residency and fellowship at The Ohio State University Medical Center. Dr. Winkleman is a physician with Presence Medical Group and was named Physician of the Year at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in 2015.

Our weight-loss team is made up of dedicated clinical experts who are committed to patients achieving their weight loss goals.

Our team includes:

  • Bariatric Nurse Navigator
    • Meets with candidates and schedules all testing
    • Communicates with insurance companies to obtain surgical approval
    • Serves as a liaison between patients and other team members
  • Registered Dietitian
    • Evaluates each patient’s diet history
    • Assists patients with meal planning
    • Explains and prepares candidates for pre and post-operative nutritional care
  • Your Medical Doctor(s)
    • Assists with pre and post-operative medical management
