Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center's Pulmonary Rehabilitation Achieves Recertification by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center was awarded program certification for its Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) in 2005. Certification recognizes those programs rigorously reviewed by a national board and found to meet the outlined essential requirements for standards of care.
Pulmonary rehabilitation programs involved a multidimensional continuum of services by interdisciplinary specialists, directed to persons with pulmonary disease and their families. The goal of this team is to achieve and maintain the individual's maximum level of independence and functioning in the community.
The Pulmonary Rehabilitation team at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center combines supervised exercise with education to help patients build physical endurance, increased confidence, and improved ability to perform activities of daily living. The program educates patients and their families on how to better handle their disease and ultimately reduce complications and hospitalizations associated with chronic lung disease.
The program also hosts a support group called Breath Takers, for individuals with breathing problems such as problems asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis, or those persons living with a loved one who has breathing problems. Breath Takers support group provides meetings, held the third Thursday of each month. Each meeting consists of an educational segment along with conversation and exchange of ideas.
Margaret Downey, Exercise Physiologist and Department Coordinator says, "The focus of our Cardio-Pulmonary rehabilitation program is exercise and education. We help the patient become better able to self-manage their disease by encouraging both patients and their families to learn more about lung disease management."
