Stroke is the third leading cause of death in and the number one cause of adult disability, according to the National Stroke Association. Presence Saint Joseph Hospital has responded by becoming one of the first Presence Health hospitals to develop an accredited stroke treatment center.
People who come to the emergency room when stroke symptoms begin have the greatest opportunity for successful recovery. Our quick diagnosis and expert clinical procedures play a key role.
Upon arrival at the Primary Stroke Center , patients are asked when their symptoms began and are given a diagnostic test. If the patient fits within the protocol for stroke, he or she immediately receives a CAT scan, and clot-busting drugs are administered.
Eighty percent of all strokes are preventable, which is why we have made community education and awareness important components of the Primary Stroke Center.
