Imaging and Radiology at Presence Saint Joseph: Why Choose Us?

We use imaging to diagnose and treat a full range of medical conditions—from sports injuries to vascular conditions to cancer—for patients of all ages. Our physicians can view, with extraordinary clarity, everything from tiny blockages in the veins to microscopic tumors. Our imaging and radiology services feature:

  • Imaging expertise: All our radiologists are board certified, and many have specialized training in orthopedics, breast imaging and other areas. We see about 6,000 patients per month, so our technologists are very experienced.
  • 24-hour imaging services: We support all imaging services throughout the hospital, including the cancer, emergency and surgery departments. Our radiologists provide 24-hour onsite services.
  • Excellence in breast imaging: Accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers.
  • National recognition: We have received accreditations from the American College of Radiology for breast ultrasound, CT imaging, mammography and stereotactic biopsy.
  • Patient satisfaction: We’re focused on meeting all your needs for a smooth patient experience. Our amenities include comfortable changing rooms, updated restrooms and extended appointment hours.

Radiology and Imaging Services

In our Advanced Imaging Center, we offer the latest advancements in radiology and imaging technology for women, men and children, including:

  • 64-slice CT (computed tomography) scan: Uses specialized X-ray equipment to produce 3-D, cross-sectional images of the body. We can use CT scans to diagnose stroke, many types of cancer, blood clots, signs of heart disease and internal bleeding.
  • MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan: Uses a large magnet to produce images of organs and other internal structures. Our wide-bore MRI provides a more open experience for patients and reduces scan time by about half without compromising image quality. The 3T (Tesla) technology provides much clearer images, which is especially useful in diagnosing many conditions of the brain and spinal cord.
  • Nuclear medicine scan: Uses radioactive substances to produce images of internal structures and body functions. We use nuclear scans to diagnose cancer, injuries and infections and detect heart disease.
  • PET (positron emission tomography)/CT scan: PET scanning uses radioactive substances injected into the bloodstream to produce molecular-level images. The combined PET/CT technologies produce detailed images of the internal anatomy with the ability to show cell abnormalities at a very early stage. PET/CT scanning is useful for diagnosing certain brain disorders, cancer and heart disease.
  • SAVI Scout: Innovative technology that accurately pinpoints a breast tumor before surgery using radar technology. This provides added comfort during procedures, decreased wait times between radiology and surgery, easier localization of the breast tumor and enhanced surgical success of targeted tumors.
  • Ultrasound: Uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of organs and internal structures. We often use ultrasound to diagnose conditions in the blood vessels, heart, kidneys, liver, and other organs. During pregnancy, doctors use ultrasound to view the fetus.
  • X-ray: Uses a small amount of radiation to produce images of internal body structures. We use X-rays to diagnose a wide range of injuries and illnesses, from broken bones to pneumonia to breast cancer (in mammograms).

Breast Imaging Services for Women

Our Women’s Imaging department offers private changing areas and other comforting touches to provide a soothing atmosphere. We can often schedule your appointments within 48 hours of your phone call. Our women’s imaging services include:

  • Bone density (DEXA): Uses low-dose X-rays to measure calcium and other minerals in your bones. We use DEXA scans to predict and detect osteoporosis.
  • Breast MRI: Used in addition to mammography to detect cancer at very early stages in women at high risk for developing breast cancer.
  • Image-guided breast biopsy: Helps diagnose breast cancer by providing MRI, ultrasound or stereotactic mammography imaging scans to guide a breast biopsy (a tissue sample to analyze for signs of breast cancer). Our core needle technology uses a special vacuum-assisted needle to draw out tissue from suspicious areas.
  • Mammography: Uses X-rays in a specially designed machine to produce digital images of the breasts to analyze for abnormalities. Different types of mammograms include:
    • Screening mammograms: The American Cancer Society recommends this exam annually for all women aged 40 and over.
    • Diagnostic mammograms: Women who have had an abnormal mammogram, a history of breast cancer or detected a breast lump need diagnostic mammograms to further evaluate the suspicious area.
    • 3-D mammography: This technology produces multiple image slices of the breast to show the tissue in 3-D for easier readability and greater accuracy. We offer the newest 3-D technology available for mammography which is especially beneficial for women who are younger or have dense breasts.
