Long History of HIV Care

Presence Saint Joseph Hospital and its physicians have played a major role in the Chicago medical community's response to the HIV epidemic. In 1987, the hospital opened one of the first dedicated HIV inpatients units. The hospital and its physicians were actively involved in HIV-treatment research through the National Institutes of Health. Many treatments and medications offered today are based on research from clinical trials conducted at Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in the 1990s.

With appropriate treatment, patients with HIV infection today can live long and productive lives decades after diagnosis. Most care provided today occurs in the outpatient setting. With access to highly effective treatments, patients rarely need inpatient care.

If patients require hospitalization, they can generally count on visits from the doctors who see them in the office. This practice preserves continuity of care and comforts the patient with the trust of a familiar provider, when it is needed most.
