Pain Management at Presence Saint Francis Hospital

We believe that the best approach to pain management is care that relieves pain while addressing related health conditions to promote healing. At Presence Saint Francis, our pain management clinic offers:

  • Advanced training in physical medicine and pain management: Our program director is a physiatrist, which is a physician trained in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R). With double board certification in PM&R and pain management, he has years of expertise in determining and treating the musculoskeletal (muscle, joint and bone) causes of pain.
  • Multiple disciplines for specialty care: Our physician leads a team of nurses with knowledge and skills in primary care, PM&R and pain management. We work with your primary care physician and specialists to provide a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses not only your pain, but also the conditions that are causing it.
  • Patient-focused care: Our clinic is within Presence Saint Francis Hospital, a community hospital with a friendly atmosphere. The caring staff spends time getting to know you and understanding your health. We’re dedicated to finding the right treatments for your individual needs, to help provide the best quality of life.

Pain Management: Conditions We Treat

With our holistic approach to pain management, we use a variety of methods designed to target various points along the pain pathway. We provide relief for patients suffering from a number of conditions that cause chronic or acute pain, including:

  • Arthritis in the low back, knee, shoulder and rotator cuff
  • Bulging or herniated (ruptured) disks, the cartilage between vertebrae that cushion each vertebra
  • Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS, also known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome): Chronic pain that affects arms, hands, legs or feet, usually after an injury
  • Diabetic pain, also known as peripheral neuropathy, caused by nerve damage in the arms, hands, legs or feet
  • Fibromyalgia: Rheumatic disorder (affecting joints and muscles) that causes fatigue, pain and tenderness
  • Joint pain
  • Low back pain
  • Migraines and headaches
  • Musculoskeletal (affecting muscles, bones and joints) and sports injuries
  • Neck pain
  • Neuropathic pain: Chronic pain caused by nerves that are damaged, injured or dysfunctional
  • Post-herpetic neuralgia: Chronic nerve pain that develops as a result of shingles
  • Radiculopathy: Irritated nerves caused by damaged disks between vertebrae anywhere along the spine
  • Sciatica: Radiculopathy in the low back and one or both legs
  • Shingles: Painful rash caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox
  • Spinal stenosis: Narrowed spaces among bones in the spine, which create pressure on the spinal cord and cause pain and numbness in various parts of the body

Comprehensive Options for Treating Pain

We offer pain management whether you come to our outpatient clinic or are receiving care as an inpatient in the hospital. Our treatment options include:

  • Botox (botulinum toxin) for chronic migraine headaches
  • Joint injections of steroids to relieve arthritis and other pain
  • Minimally invasive spine injections including epidural steroid injections and nerve root blocks
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections of your own blood, with concentrated platelets, to promote healing in an injured area
  • Prolotherapy injections of an irritant solution to trigger the body’s natural healing process to repair soft tissue injuries
  • Radiofrequency and cooled radiofrequency ablation using radio waves to treat inflamed nerves and relieve pain
  • Trigger point injections of steroids and/or anesthetic into muscle knots to relieve spasms and inflammation
  • Viscosupplementation (such as Hyalgan and Synvisc) injections into the knees to cushion the joint and relieve pain
  • Dorsal column stimulators and peripheral nerve stimulators, which use a mild electric current to relieve pain in the spinal cord and the nerves connecting the spinal cord to the rest of the body
