Nationally Recognized Expertise in Emergency Services

At Presence Saint Francis, the hospital overall and our emergency department have received accreditations from national health care organizations for our excellent emergency care, including:

  • Leapfrog Grade A, the highest score given for a hospital’s performance in patient safety
  • Magnet recognition, awarded to the top 5 percent of hospitals in the nation for nursing excellence
  • Primary Stroke Center from The Joint Commission for expert stroke care
  • Accredited Cycle IV Chest Pain Center from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC) for the highest standards of care for chest pain and heart attack

Your care team in our Emergency and Trauma Center has advanced training and certifications in emergency care, including:

  • All our nurses have ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support), BLS (Basic Life Support) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certifications and have completed trauma nursing core curriculum (TNCC) to care for trauma patients.
  • On every shift, we have certified trauma nurse specialists (TNS), who are our key resources for caring for trauma patients.
  • Many of our nurses are certified emergency nurses.

Highest Quality Care for Chest Pain

In 2003, Presence Saint Francis was the first in Illinois to receive chest pain center accreditation from the SCPC. We’re now a Cycle IV Center, which means we provide the highest level of comprehensive care for patients with chest pain and other heart attack symptoms.

For our Evanston community, that means we have the best processes in place to:

  • Reduce the time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis and treatment
  • Treat patients more quickly during the critical window when the heart muscle can be preserved
  • Monitor patients when it is not certain that they are having a heart attack, ensuring that they are not sent home too quickly or needlessly admitted to the hospital

Our Emergency Department is steps away from the Galvin Heart Center and Chest Pain Center, offering our patients additional resources for complete heart attack care. With experienced cardiac specialists and advanced tools such as two state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization suites, we provide comprehensive heart attack treatment when you need it most.

*The wait time represents the time it takes to see a qualified medical professional, defined as a Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), Physician Assistant (PA) or Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP). Emergency department wait times represent a rolling average updated every 15 minutes.
