Expert Services for Breast Care at Presence Saint Francis

Our expert team of board-certified radiologists and technologists offer breast care services including:

  • Mammography: A low-dose breast X-ray that identifies abnormalities and helps diagnose breast diseases in women. Mammography is key for detecting breast cancer early because it can show changes in the breast up to two years before they can be felt.
  • Routine screening mammogram: The American Cancer Society recommends that all women age 40 and older have an annual screening mammogram.
  • Diagnostic mammogram: This exam provides further information in women who either currently have a lump, new pain in the breast or nipple discharge, or had an abnormality found at their most recent screening mammogram.
  • Full-field digital mammography: An advanced imaging technology that can emphasize contrasts and identify abnormalities that may not be as visible on traditional film mammography. This type of mammogram is helpful for women with dense or thick breasts, women under age 50 and pre- and peri-menopausal women. Digital mammography offers other benefits, including:
  • Less exposure to radiation: A digital mammogram can use up to 50 percent less radiation and still detect breast cancer.
  • Reduced exam time: Shorter times can significantly improve your comfort and convenience.
  • A built-in "second opinion" with CAD: We can use digital mammography in conjunction with CAD (computer-aided detection system) to identify potential concerns even before the radiologist views the results.
  • Easy storage and quick retrieval of images: It’s fast and easy to transmit digital images from one physician to another.
  • Stereotactic breast biopsy: If you need a biopsy, stereotactic core breast biopsy is an accurate, minimally invasive way to sample suspicious tissue. Using the visual coordinates from a digital mammogram, the radiologist uses a computer to guide the biopsy needle to the precise location and collect several samples. The examination requires only local anesthesia. In many instances, stereotactic breast biopsies avoid the need for surgery.
  • Breast ultrasound: Sound waves produce an image of the tissues inside the breast. This technique enables imaging from almost any angle and distinguishes between noncancerous cysts and other masses that may require further evaluation.
  • MR-guided breast biopsy: Our radiologists can use magnetic resonance imaging to help guide their instruments to the suspicious area for taking tissue samples.
