Presence Mercy Medical Center

Our Mission

Presence Health, a Catholic health system, builds communities of healing and hope by compassionately responding to human need in the spirit of Jesus Christ.

Commitment to Our Communities

As was the case from our very beginnings, Presence Health is called to be much more than just a provider of health services.  Rather, we are steeped in a culture that is committed to responding to the needs of those we are privileged to serve, delivering high quality care that is accessible to all.  It is this culture of caring and giving that drives our diligent efforts to ensure we return the optimal value of our charitable assets to our local communities.

As we carry on the ministry of Jesus Christ, we are called to provide service and advocacy for people whose social condition puts them at the margins of society.  We do this because we believe that all persons - the healthy and the sick, the rich and the poor, the well-educated and those with little education - are children of the same loving God.

We are committed to determining need in our communities and to creating ways to meet those needs.  We do this within our hospitals and long-term care facilities, out in our communities and even globally.

The obligation to reach out to those in need and improve health flows directly from our Catholic identity and the heritage of our founding congregations.  We welcome and respect people of all beliefs and traditions.  We are called to partner with the communities we serve to improve the quality of life for everyone.  We provide community benefits because we are committed to:

  • Promoting and defending human dignity
  • Promoting the common good
  • Caring for persons living in poverty and vulnerable populations
  • Stewarding resources

Community Benefits Defined

In addition to our legal obligation as a tax-exempt, non-profit organization, our Mission calls us to provide "community benefit" to those we serve.  These are programs and activities that offer treatment and/or promote health and healing as a response to identified community needs.  Our community benefit programs meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Generates a low or negative margin
  • Responds to needs of a specific population (such as persons living in poverty)
  • Supplies services or programs that would likely be discontinued or would need to be provided by another not-for-profit or government provider
  • Responds to public health needs
  • Involves education or research that improves the overall health of the community

(Definition adopted from the Catholic Health Association Guide for Planning and Reporting Community Benefit)

Community Benefit Philosophy

Our Community Benefit Philosophy guides us even further in the development and administration of policies, procedures and programs by using the following inter-connected and Board-endorsed guiding principles: ministry identity, addressing needs, capacity-building partnerships, internal collaboration, continuous improvement, improved access, strategic planning, governance, senior leadership diversity and standardization of policies and procedures.

Community Benefit Philosophy Statement
Presence Health defines community benefit as a planned, managed, organized, and measurable approach to a health care organization's participation in meeting identified community health needs.  It implies collaboration with a "community" to "benefit" its residents - particularly the poor, minorities, and other underserved groups - by improving health status and quality of life.

Our Community Benefit Philosophy guides the development and administration of policies, procedures and programs by using the following interconnected principles: ministry identity, addressing needs, capacity-building partnerships, internal collaboration, continuous improvement, improved access, strategic planning, governance, senior leadership, diversity and standardization of policies and procedures.

A Culture of Compassion and Responsiveness

Presence Health's community benefit initiatives align the governance, management and operations of our ministries with our Mission and Values, ensuring accountability and strategic investment of charitable resources to address unmet health needs.

Committed to Care for All

Presence Health ministries have a long tradition of serving the poor, the needy and all who come to us for care.  We treat everyone in need of services, regardless of their ability to pay.  While our ministries alone cannot meet every community need, we are committed to helping those who need and qualify for financial assistance.  Our patient-focused financial assistance and uninsured discount policies surpass industry standards.
