Presence Health

From Less Invasive to Virtually Scarless

More than 1 million people in the U.S. undergo gallbladder removal as a treatment for gallstones and other issues each year. While traditional laparoscopy, a procedure that uses several incisions to remove the diseased organ, has been the most widely used approach, robotic surgery is bringing gallbladder removal to a new level. Faster recovery and minimal pain that leaves you virtually scarless are just a few reasons Presence Health is thrilled to offer our patients this option.

da Vinci® Single-Site™ Cholecystectomy

The Food and Drug Administration cleared the da Vinci® Single-Site™ Cholecystectomy in December 2011. Presence Health surgeons soon thereafter paved the way for the innovative new procedure by performing the first and second surgeries in the state. This innovative new approach to robotic gallbladder removal, which blends computer, robotic and surgical technologies, allows our surgeons to remove the organ through a one inch incision in the belly button and gives our patients the benefits of:

  • Virtually scarless results
  • Minimal pain and blood loss
  • Unprecedented recovery

The Best Get Better with the Precision of Robotics

Our already highly-regarded network of surgeons is bringing an even higher level of care to patients with this cutting-edge robotic technology. Gallbladder removal can now be completed with the surgeon sitting comfortably at a console, viewing a 3D, high-definition image of the patient’s anatomy. In real-time, the system translates the surgeon's hand, wrist and finger movements on the controls into more precise movements. After making a single incision in the patient's navel, a camera and special tiny curved instruments are inserted through the small opening with the robotic arm to cut and remove the gallbladder. The entire procedure is complete in about one hour and most patients return home the same day—thrilled with the results.
