Presence Medical Group (PMG) sponsored their third annual Coats for the Community initiative from October through December. For the past two years, Presence Health partnered with the Chicago Fire Department in an effort to raise coat donations for the communities their hospitals serve. Locally, the physicians and staff of PMG worked to gather coats and other cold weather attire for local residents. The coats were donated to the Kankakee County Salvation Army on December 18 to be given to those in need.
The Coats for the Community initiative began in 2013 from the generosity of Brian Field, M.D., a hospitalist at Presence St. Mary’s Hospital (PSMH).
Dr. Field was getting ready to discharge a patient as the temperature outside was beginning to drop. He learned his patient did not have a coat to wear in the frigid conditions. Before the patient left, Dr. Field went and gathered a new coat, hat and gloves that he had just purchased for himself and gave them to the man upon discharge. His generous act of kindness inspired PSMH to launch Coats for the Community, which has since been incorporated throughout the Presence Health system.
“Presence St. Mary’s Hospital has been a leader in Kankakee community health for over 100 years, and these initiatives are an important piece of our Presence Health mission to provide assistance to the most vulnerable populations in any way that we can.” said Kathleen Rhine, Regional President & CEO, Presence Health South Suburban Region.
