Hospitals throughout Illinois to Benefit from Grant Supported Efforts
Chicago, IL- The Illinois Health & Hospital Association (IHHA) has awarded Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center and four other Presence Health Hospitals $30,000 in grants to implement sodium reduction strategies to benefit patients, staff and the local community. Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center will receive $10,000 to directly support efforts in the West Town neighborhood of Chicago.
Supported by the grant funding, a team of physicians, food service staff, administrators and community partners will review current food service offerings and how those offerings can be improved to better benefit the health of the community. The work will include a comprehensive food policy review, addressing purchasing decisions to positively impact healthy food choices, as well as overall nutrition standards, patient meals, physical wellness strategies and programs, and community education efforts about nutrition.
Regarding the sodium reduction grants being awarded to Presence Health hospitals, IHHA Director of Membership & Education, Abby Radcliffe commented, “This partnership between the Illinois Health and Hospital Association and Presence Health displays a motivation toward tackling heart disease and stroke, starting with a reduction in sodium for some of our most vulnerable residents.”
Regarding the grant, Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center Clinical Nutrition Manager Nick Groch RD, LDN commented, “Through our efforts supported by the generous grants, we can change the hospital food environment and the broad positive impact it has on our communities. By offering healthier food options to patients, staff and the community, our hospitals can model and exemplify healthy eating choices and behaviors. ” He added, “Presence Health hospitals serve thousands of meals every day to our employees, patients and visitors, each of these meals represents an opportunity to promote a healthy food choice and reduce sodium consumption.”
Best practices learned from these efforts will be collected and distributed statewide so all Illinois hospitals benefit from the grant supported effort. Funding for this program was made possible by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Preventive Health and Services Block Grant from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).
