The Neuroscience Institute (NSI) of Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center (PSJMC) has announced the development of a new stroke support group called AFTERGLOW. The goal of AFTERGLOW is to provide support for stroke survivors, their families and friends. Attendees will share dialogue and fellowship with others who have experienced similar situations, along with opportunities to meet NSI experts. The first meeting of AFTERGLOW will take place on January 13, 2016, from 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. (dinner will be provided) located in Auditorium B at PSJMC.
The name “AFTERGLOW” came from an experience of one of the group’s founders who endured a stroke more than 10 years ago. She felt as though a part of her old self had died with her stroke and was resistant to therapy. It wasn’t until she attended a previous support group that she began to feel a “spark glowing with life” and began the process of accepting her “new normal.”
“Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center is excited to provide the foundation for this important community support group,” said Kathleen Rhine, President and CEO, Presence Health South Suburban Region. “This initiative is an extension of our mission for community health. It is also an opportunity to expose the residents of our region to the expert knowledge base of our Neuroscience Institute.”
AFTERGLOW is registered with the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. The new Presence Joliet Chapter represents the second AFTERGLOW stroke support group in the Presence Health 12 hospital system. The first chapter was chartered at Presence Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago.
PSJMC is located at 333 N. Madison St., Joliet, Illinois. Attendees may utilize the free valet service at the Madison Street Entrance #2. Wheelchairs will be provided along with walking assistance to Auditorium B as needed. Attendees of the January meeting are encouraged to RSVP at 877.737.4636.
