The high quality of breast cancer care at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center (PSJMC) has earned the organization a three-year, full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons.

Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.  During the survey process, PSJMC demonstrated a firm commitment to offer its patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease. The NAPBC standards include proficiency in the areas of: center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education, and quality improvement.

“When a breast center achieves accreditation by the NAPBC, you can be assured that it is held to the highest standard of care - not only locally, but at a national level,” says breast surgeon Dr. Diane Drugas,

PSJMC began the application process for accreditation in September 2014. Spearheading the project was a leadership committee composed of physicians, including Dr. Drugas, nurses, radiologists and technologists along with representatives from Quality Control, Cancer Registry, and Community Outreach.

“When a patient is diagnosed with breast cancer, the choices she or he face can be overwhelming,” added Drugas. “Our expert interdisciplinary team and continuum of care makes the treatment process as coordinated and seamless as possible.”

That continuum of care includes, among other things, a multidisciplinary approach to care management, proper communication between staff and with the patient, and quality care options that are close to home, including multiple ambulatory sights located throughout Will County.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimated that there would be 232,340 patients diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in the United States in 2013. In addition, hundreds of thousands of women who will deal with benign breast disease this year will require medical evaluation for treatment options.

Being named a NAPBC-accredited center ensures that PSJMC patients will have access to:

  • Comprehensive care, including a full range of state-of-the-art services
  • A multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
  • Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options

And, most importantly,

  • Quality breast care close to home.

This accreditation is a direct reflection of the highly-experienced staff at PSJMC who have built the service into a true market leader.

A Reminder to Be Proactive:
Early Detection is still the best medicine.

Survival rates are much higher when cancer is detected in its earliest stages. Every woman over 40 should schedule an annual mammogram. If found early enough, patients can avoid chemotherapy and be treated with minimum discomfort.

PSJMC is continuously committed to staying at the forefront of imaging technology by providing the most advanced digital equipment, including 3D mammography imaging (Tomosynthesis), to get the best images possible.
