$100,000 Grant Supports Access to Mental Health Care for Patients in 14 Illinois Towns
(Suburban Chicago, IL) – For the second year, Proviso Township Mental Health Commission has awarded Presence Health a significant grant to support a TelePsychiatry program that began a little over a year ago. Larger than the last year’s $90,000 grant, the new $100,000 grant will support the continuation of online, scheduled, real-time mental health care, or “TeleBehavioral Health” services. The program serves Proviso Township’s 14 towns where there had previously been a shortage of psychiatrists. Presence TeleHealth uses video conferencing, similar to Skype, allowing providers to remotely evaluate and treat their patients. Essentially, the program provides access to quality, one-on-one mental health care to the previously underserved Proviso Township communities.
This new funding comes at a particularly good time for those in the Proviso communities requiring behavioral health care. Until recent passage of new state legislation, a Medicaid requirement mandated that a licensed mental health care professional be present with the patient during a Telepsychiatry appointment, creating unnecessary cost for Telepsychiatry consultations. This past year, Presence Health worked closely with both Illinois House and Senate leaders, including Representative Patti Bellock (47th District) and Senator Pat McGuire (43rd Senate District), to craft a bi-partisan bill to remove the telepsychiatry regulatory requirement. The key benefit from the new Telehealth legislation, for mental health patients in Proviso Township as well as across the state of Illinois, is greater access to behavioral health care.
“This program allows a psychiatrist to easily connect with patients in need of behavioral health treatment and services virtually, “said Presence Health Telehealth Strategy and Development System Director Laura Messineo RN, BS, MHA. “With the additional grant generously provided by Proviso Township and new state legislation making access to care even easier for patients, we are confident that the Proviso TelePsychiatry program will be even more successful.”
The Illinois towns to be served by the Presence TelePsychiatry program include, Bellwood, Berkeley, Broadview, Brookfield, Forest Park, Hillside, La Grange Park, Maywood, Melrose Park, North Riverside, Northlake, Stone Park, Westchester and Western Springs.
