Three Presence Health Hospitals Earn an “A” Grade for Patient Safety from The Leapfrog Group

Chicago, Ill. – When it comes to patient safety, three Presence Health hospitals are at the top of the class, all earning an “A” on the spring 2017 Hospital Safety Score. The elite national ratings program, administered by the independent hospital watchdog The Leapfrog Group, grades hospitals on how safe they keep their patients from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections.

The three Presence Health hospitals that earned an “A” grade are:

  • Presence Resurrection Medical Center – Chicago, Ill.
  • Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center (PSMEMC) – Chicago, Ill.
    • Note: In addition to PSMEMC recently receiving the “Top Teaching Hospital” Award, this latest “A” grade makes eight consecutive A’s over four years.
  • Presence Saint Joseph Hospital – Chicago, Ill.

The Hospital Safety Score is the gold standard rating for patient safety, compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading patient safety experts. The first and only hospital safety rating to be peer-reviewed in the Journal of Patient Safety, the Hospital Safety Score is free to the public and designed to give consumers information to use for protecting themselves and their families when facing a hospital stay.

“We are proud of the dedication and collaboration among our talented clinicians and associates to keep a laser focus on patient safety. The Leapfrog Group is well-respected within the health care industry and the “A” score is recognition of the high quality, compassionate care Presence Health delivers to our patients every day,” said Michael Englehart, President and CEO, Presence Health.

Ratings are developed under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single A, B, C, D, or F score. The score represents a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm. 2,639 U.S. general hospitals were assigned scores in in the latest report, with only 823 hospitals receiving an “A” grade.

Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, which administers the Hospital Safety Score has previously said, “The ‘A’ grade is a powerful reminder of a hospital’s commitment to putting patient safety above all else, and we are pleased to recognize the persistent efforts of Presence Health clinicians and staff to protect patients. Our families, neighbors, colleagues and friends deserve a hospital that will pull out all the stops to keep them safe, and we urge all “A” hospitals to preserve and renew your commitment to safety year after year.”
