Presence Behavioral Health Awarded Grant by City of Chicago To Support “Connect for Success” Program Benefiting City’s Underserved Youth

Violence Levels Among Top Health Issues in Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center Area Prompting Need for Youth-Focused Behavioral Health Program

(Chicago, IL) – Presence Behavioral Health (PBH) has received a $35,000 grant from the City of Chicago’s Department of Family and Support Services to fund their “Connect for Success” program located at Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center (PSMEMC). On behalf of underserved youth between the ages of 6 and 18 in the neighborhoods around PSMEMC, “Connect for Success” will promote child, family and community health through group and individual counseling, case management, family involvement and interpersonal skills development.

According to the 2013 Community Health Needs Assessment of the neighborhoods served by PSMEMC, violence is among the top most problematic health issues in the area; underscoring the critical need for youth-focused behavioral health care and intervention. The PBH program will ultimately help to prevent violence at a frequent source, the young people in the community surrounding PSMEMC.

Presence Behavioral Health Manager Andrea Peterson explained, “…the solution to reducing community violence in Chicago lies within our young people. That’s why we are developing youth-focused behavioral health care and intervention; taking proactive steps with young people to reduce violence before it occurs. The young people are the ones that live it, whose parents are in jail or often addicted; their parents are working three jobs so they’re not at home.  We need more people in our community to understand and provide support for our youth. “
