AMITA Health Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center and AMITA Health Resurrection Medical Center Earn Top Hospital Designation by The Leapfrog Group

Chicago, ILL, December 4, 2018 – Highlighting its nationally recognized achievements in patient safety and quality, AMITA Health Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center (formerly Presence Health) and AMITA Health Resurrection Medical Center (formerly Presence Health) were named Top Teaching Hospitals by The Leapfrog Group. Announced today, the Leapfrog Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive honors American hospitals can receive. The Top Hospital designation is awarded by The Leapfrog Group, an independent hospital watchdog organization.

The Top Hospital Award comes following 11 consecutive “A” Hospital Safety Grades for Saints Mary and Elizabeth and 5 consecutive “A”’s for Resurrection Medical Center, also from the Leapfrog Group.  Saints Mary and Elizabeth was also named a Top Hospital for 2016. Earlier this year, 10 AMITA Health hospitals were awarded “A” Safety Grades.

“As teaching hospitals, both facilities actively promote the values of quality and patient safety in the training of physicians in a variety of fields,” said Matt Brown, M.D., System Director of Medical Education for AMITA Health. “To be one of only a handful of health systems in the nation with multiple hospitals recognized as Top Teaching hospitals is an honor. Our resident physicians are actively involved in quality and safety reporting and serve on hospital committees dedicated to improving the clinical learning environment.”

Among thousands of hospitals in the country, these two AMITA Health Hospitals received a Top Teaching distinction, recognized nationally alongside:

  • 13 Top Children’s Hospitals
  • 35 Top General Hospitals
  • 17 Top Rural Hospitals
  • 53 Top Teaching Hospitals

Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, maternity care, and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication errors. The rigorous standards are defined in each year’s Top Hospital Methodology.

“Being acknowledged as a Top Hospital is an incredible feat achieved by less than six percent of eligible hospitals nationwide,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “With this honor, AMITA Health has established its commitment to safer and higher quality care. Providing this level of care to patients in Chicago requires motivation and drive from every team member. I congratulate the board, staff and clinicians at both hospitals, whose efforts made this honor possible.”

To qualify for the Top Hospitals distinction, hospitals must submit a Leapfrog Hospital Survey and achieve highest performance in its category. The selection of Top Hospitals 2018 is based on surveys from nearly 1,900 hospitals. To see the full list of institutions honored as 2018 Top Hospitals, visit www.leapfroggroup.org/tophospitals.
