The award recognizes AMITA’s incorporation of virtual health care services to improve quality of care for underserved populations
(Lisle, Ill., November 15, 2018) The Partnership for a Connected Illinois (PCI), in partnership with the American Telemedicine Association, has announced AMITA Health as the recipient of the 2018 Award for Improved Care for Underserved Populations.
The award, which recognizes AMITA’s incorporation of telehealth services to improve the quality of care for seniors with diabetes, is part of the Awards for Excellence in Telehealth Leadership. These are given to organizations making exceptional contributions to advancing telehealth on behalf of their members, employees, communities, providers and patients.
“Seniors with diabetes are an underserved community,” said AMITA Health Vice President of Telehealth Services Laura Messineo RN, BS, MHA. “We know seniors with diabetes are at a high risk for complications such as cognitive dysfunction, falls, fractures, cardiovascular disease, cancer, depression and increased morbidity and mortality rates.”
Messineo said the AMITA program allows telehealth services to be conducted by licensed dieticians and certified diabetic educators for diabetic seniors, removing possible transportation barriers and allowing for care in the homes while avoiding diabetic complications.
Since 2001, AMITA has developed 17 custom telehealth services that fully integrate into the overall care delivery model, including Tele-ICU, TelePsychiatry, TeleStroke, Remote Sitter, TeleHospice, TeleEducation and Virtual Family Visits. These programs have resulted in increased access to care, improved quality and safety metrics, while reducing costs.
"Telehealth offers the promise to improve access to care and the quality of care, while reducing the strain on family caregivers," according to Bob Gallo, AARP Illinois State Director. "AARP Illinois was pleased to support AMITA Health's telehealth legislative initiatives which were signed into law. We will continue to engage with lawmakers and health care leaders to prioritize the needs and preferences of the consumer, especially family caregivers, in telehealth advancements in Illinois."
This is the second year AMITA Health has been recognized by PCI. Last year, AMITA— operating as Presence Health—was recognized with The Improved Policy Changes to Advance Telehealth Award for efforts to promote and enact positive legislative changes to support the behavioral health needs of patients across Illinois.
